The benefits of high resolution scanning are two-fold. One benefit is image usability. High resolution scans create very large digital image files that are extremely detailed and can be printed larger than ever. Another huge benefit is that large digital images can be edited in a much more precise and detailed manner. Editing techniques used during the digital restoration process can be applied in smaller increments. ( dust filters, brushes, etc. ) More pixels equal more possibilities.
Did you know that your 1080p HDTV is only a 2 megapixel image? Yep. No matter what size your HDTV is – the full screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels. So why do you need high resolution scans? Well, HDTV’s and computer monitors display at a resolution of 72 pixels per inch. Print resolution is much higher – usually 300 pixels per inch. That’s why we scan all photos, negatives and slides at high resolution. So you can print enlargements with amazing quality and detail. Even a small portion of the scan can produce most common print sizes.
Mini-lab and drugstore scans are usually produced on high speed machines at low resolution. In the Mini-lab business speed and volume are priority. Not quality. On a high speed printer negatives and slides are scanned at 300 pixels per inch which can produce a 4”x6” standard print. The actual digital image size is approximately 1482 x 966 pixels – which is only a 1.4 megapixel image! Why pay for scans that don’t even fill your HD screen?
At RestoreMyPix your 35mm negatives and slides are scanned at 4000 pixels per inch which can produce a high quality 12” x 18” print at 300 dpi without even enlarging the scanned image!. A RestoreMyPix digital image is approximately 5400 x 3600 pixels – which is equivalent to a 19 megapixel image! When printed at 240 pixels per inch you can print up to 17″ x 22″ with great image quality.
The following scan resolutions are for 35mm slide and negative scans. Medium and large format negatives and slide scan resolutions vary based on original size. Print scan resolutions also vary based on size of original image. Example: A wallet size print would be scanned at a much higher resolution than an 8″x10″ print. One thing for sure is that you will get very large digital images regardless of the original media size. The following prices are based on a minimum of 25 scans. photos, slides, or negatives.
